Disclosed is a method of making an idler roller for conveyors having an outer shell and end bearing assemblies, as well as idler rollers made by the method. The method includes the steps of press fitting an inner race of each of the two bearing assemblies of the roller onto a roller shaft to an initial position which is spaced axially outwardly from a final desired position, mounting the end caps into the outer shell of the roller, restraining the outer shell, and axially reciprocating the shaft relative to the shell to determine the degree of axial movement which is equal to the bearing clearance. The inner race of the bearing assembly is then moved from its initial position to its final position determined by the degree of axial movement. The resulting idler bearing having tapered roller bearings has precise and consistent end-play settings, is relatively easy to produce, and is affordably priced. The method allows for the production of such idler rollers automatically and at high volume.
