An ignition device for an internal combustion engine, such as a spark plug, includes two fine wire, rectangular cross-section, noble metal ground electrodes and a center electrode having a fine wire, rectangular cross- section, noble metal firing tip. The ignition device includes a metal housing and an insulator secured within the metal housing which has an exposed electrode end at an opening in the housing. The insulator houses a center electrode having an electrode base mounted in the insulator and extending through the insulator at the electrode end. The electrode base has an axial bore in an end proximate the electrode end of the insulator. The noble metal firing tip is located partly within the axial bore and is metallurgically bonded to the electrode base. The first noble metal ground electrode has a rectangular cross-section and is metallurgical bonded to the metal housing and extends inwardly to a first firing end and a first firing end face that is adjacent to a side face of the noble metal firing tip. The second noble metal ground electrode is spaced apart from the first noble metal electrode. It also has a rectangular cross-section and is metallurgically bonded to the metal housing and extends inwardly to a second firing end and a second firing end face that is adjacent to another side face of the noble metal firing tip. The noble metal firing tip and the ground electrodes are preferably formed from Ir or an Ir alloy. It is also preferred that the Ir alloy includes at least one of W, Y, La, Ru and Zr as an alloying constituent.
L'invention concerne un dispositif d'allumage pour moteur à combustion interne, p. ex. bougie d'allumage, qui comprend deux électrodes de masse en métal noble de fil fin de section rectangulaire, et une électrode centrale comportant une pointe d'allumage en métal noble de fil fin de section rectangulaire. Le dispositif d'allumage comprend un corps métallique et un isolant, fixé dans le corps métallique et qui comporte une extrémité d'électrode exposée, à une ouverture du corps. L'isolant contient une électrode centrale comportant une base d'électrode montée dans l'isolant et qui se déploie à travers celui-ci, à l'extrémité de l'électrode. La base d'électrode comporte un trou axial dans une extrémité proche de l'extrémité d'électrode de l'isolant. La pointe d'allumage en métal noble se situe partiellement dans le trou axial et est liée par des moyens métallurgiques à la base d'électrode. La première électrode de masse en métal noble présente une section rectangulaire, est liée par des moyens métallurgiques au corps métallique et se déploie vers l'intérieur, en direction d'une première extrémité d'allumage et d'une première face d'extrémité d'allumage, adjacente à une face latérale de la pointe d'allumage. La seconde électrode de masse en métal noble est espacée de la première, présente aussi une section rectangulaire, est liée par des moyens métallurgiques au corps métallique et se déploie vers l'intérieur, en direction d'une seconde extrémité d'allumage et d'une première face d'extrémité d'allumage, adjacente à une face latérale de la pointe d'allumage. La pointe d'allumage en métal noble et les électrodes de masse sont de préférence formées à partir d'Ir ou d'un alliage d'Ir. L'alliage d'Ir comprend de préférence comme composant d'alliage au moins un des éléments suivants: W, Y, La, Ru et Zr.
