The invention is an improved architectural building element, railing system, railing picket (baluster), shutter, gable and building construction element which utilizes a light source within an internal cavity and the thickness of the structural element to both directly and indirectly light the cavity and a series of openings or cutouts having transverse illuminated surfaces in the structural element for a pleasing twilight effect. Multiple views of the pattern of the interior, the openings and their various transverse surfaces are viewable from the exterior without being overpowered by any substantial direct lighting. Cutouts expose the internal cavity include at least one illumination surface transverse to the said external wall and a light source within said cavity which is not substantially exposed to view from the exterior while illuminating the cavity and the illumination surfaces. The form is an upstanding building structure with a front, two side and a rear panels.
