An improved illuminated bougie is provided herein for illuminating a body. The bougie is elongate and is dimensioned and configured for insertion into the body. The bougie has socket means for attaching a light transmitting end of a fibre optic bundle. The improvement is in the form of a socket which is formed in a proximal end of the bougie. Further, the entire length of the bougie is formed of a flexible synthetic plastics material which transmits and diffuses light. In this way, the bougie transilluminates adjacent body tissue along its entire length.
