An illuminated sign is described including an impact resistant transparent face plate having a peripheral edge, an exterior face and an interior face. An alpha-numeric message is placed in reverse image on the interior face of the face plate. An impact resistant back plate is provided having a peripheral edge, an exterior face and an interior face. The interior face of the back plate faces the interior face of the face plate. An electroluminescent light panel is sandwiched between and in contact with the interior face of the face plate and the interior face of the back plate. Conductive wires are provided having a first end connected to the light panel and a second end projecting past the face plate and the back plate, such that the light panel is connected by means of the conductive wire to a power source. The illuminated sign, as described, is less susceptible to impact and vibration damage.
