ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Ilmenite, a titanium dioxide containing mineral, mixed with particulate carbon and the mixture subjected to air or oxygen in a gas-solids reactor at temperatures of 600 to 1080°C. results in the oxidation of the ilmenite which is preferred starting material for beneficiation by the chloride process into synthetic rutile.
