AT9-91-057 ABSTRACT Apparatus and method for improved Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) decompression of image information is disclosed. A processor is used to parse image information into partially decompressed information a portion at a time. Then, the processor or auxiliary digital signal processor identifies non-zero value dimensions for each block of partially decompressed information and decompresses each of the blocks of partially decompressed information based on the non-zero value dimensions of the information. Finally, the processor is employed to store and/or display the decompressed information. The decompression steps include parsing, Huffman decoding, run length decoding, unzigzagging, dequantizing, inverse discrete cosine transforming, and interleaving the decompressed information for subsequent display.
