ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides an image discriminator which includes means for generating and storing digital image data which relates to an object and its background, selection means for cyclically dividing said image data into two sets of data the one corresponding to the object and the other to the back- ground, and data integrating and averaging means for determining the mean value of integrated sets of the data and applying the mean value as a threshold to de- rive bi-level object and background data from the image data, wherein said selec- tion means is arranged to divide, during each cycle, the data into object and background data initially in accordance with predetermined background data and then in accordance with successive bi-level images.
