An image enhancement system adjusts the contrast of a digitized rasterized image, such as a scanned photograph, prior to the time that the image is printed onto transfer paper and thereafter applied using a device, such as a household iron or commercial heat press, to an article constructed of a fabric or having a fabric surface or fabric finish or directly printed onto the article to embellish the article. The contrast is increased by approximately 28 to 50 percent. Also, the brightness can be adjusted to enhance the applied image. The image is analyzed to locate a region of critical interest, such as a face in a scanned photograph, extreme light and dark artifacts are excluded, and the brightness is either decreased or increased based on the average brightness within the region of interest. The brightness adjustment can be capped at plus or minus 10 percent.
