An image-forming apparatus comprises an electron source including one or more than one electron-emitting devices on a substrate, each electron-emitting device having a pair of oppositely disposed device electrodes, an electroconductive film connected to the pair of device electrodes and an electron-emitting region formed in part of the electroconductive film accompanied by a carbonaceous film which contains carbon or carbon compound as principal ingredient and is formed on and in a vicinity of the electron-emitting region, and an image-forming member for forming an image by emitting light when irradiated with electron beams emitted from the electron source. The electron source and the image-forming member are contained in a vacuum envelope, and an organic substance exists in the vacuum envelope to show a partial pressure of the organic substance greater than 1 x 10-6Pa and a total pressure lower than 1 x 10-3Pa. The organic substance is so selected that it shows a mean absorption time shorter than the drive period of the electron source.
L'invention est constituée par un appareil de formation d'images comportant une source d'électrons incluant un ou plusieurs dispositifs d'émission d'électrons montés sur un substrat, chaque dispositif d'émission ayant une paire d'électrodes placées en opposition, un film électroconducteur étant connecté à la paire d'électrodes et une région émettrice d'électrons étant formée dans une partie du film électroconducteur, lequel est associé à un film carbonacé qui contient du carbone ou un composé du carbone comme principal ingrédient et est formé sur la région émettrice d'électrons et au voisinage de cette dernière, et un élément qui forme des images en émettant de la lumière quand il est soumis aux faisceaux d'électrons émis par la source d'électrons. Cette source d'électrons et l'élément de formation d'images sont contenus dans une enveloppe à vide; une substance organique est placée à l'intérieur de cette enveloppe à une pression partielle supérieure à 1 x 10-6 Pa et à une pression totale inférieure à 1 x 10-3 Pa. On utilise une substance organique dont le temps d'absorption moyen est inférieur à la période d'attaque de la source d'électrons.
