ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a picture processing apparatus. In particular, a picture processing apparatus suitable for executing the contour tracking of an image comprises a picture element address computation section including adders and registers, a direction code computation section for coding the transition of the picture element address as a direction on the screen, a computation control section for controlling the picture element address computation section in accordance with a request for neighbor access of a current contour picture element for detecting a next contour picture element, a request for transition from the current contour picture element address to the next contour picture element address, and a request for transition to a start point in the neighbor access, all of these requests being supplied from a system processor. Thereby, it becomes possible to increase the speed of contour tracking and arbitrarily set the size of a mask for contour tracking. An image processing apparatus capable of realizing coarse contour tracking is thus disclosed.
