An afocal image rotation device for translating a 3D image of an object along, and selectively rotating the image about, an optical axis. The device includes, in one example, a first refractive mechanism for inverting an image about a first axis normal to the optical axis; a second refractive mechanism for inverting the image about a second axis normal to the optical axis where the first and second mechanisms are optically coupled in series along the optical axis. The device also includes a mechanism for selectively rotating the refractive mechanisms relative to one another about the optical axis. All the rays exiting the rotation device bear the same angular and spatial relationship to one another as they did as they entered the device.
