ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An image stabilizer for silver halide photographic materials which contains a water-soluble bismuth compound is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the stabilizer also contains a water soluble chelating agent capable of forming a bismuth complex or its salt having a stability constant (log KMA) of 3 or more, the constant being represented by formula (I): Image (I) wherein M is a bismuth ion and A is a complex forming anion. By using this stabilizer, the processed dye image is kept stable over an extended period and the occurrence of yellow stain in the non-image area is inhibited. The stabilizer is applicable not only to color photographic materials but also to black-and- white materials.
