ABSTRACT The invention comprises an improved form of regeneratable catalyst that is capable of providing reactive oxygen to partially oxidize sulphur-containing compounds to produce sulphur. Such catalyst is useful for a method of removing sulphur compounds including both sulphur oxides and hydrogen sulphide from a fluid stream and decomposing such compounds to produce sulphur. The improved catalyst is formed by depositing alkali metal sulfide and sulfide(s) or selenide(s) of metal(s) showing polyvalent and/or amphoteric character, e.g. Zn, etc. within the matrix or body of a microporous type support, preferably alumina, to produce an imbedded catalyst. Its activity is sustained by exposure to a source of oxygen, such as air, oxygen sulphur dioxide or nitrogen peroxide and the like. A catalyst so formed may be used to absorb sulphur dioxide from flue gas and converted it to sulphur, while higher oxides of nitrogen and carbon dioxide are being absorbed for subsequent recovery.
