ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to an improved method for separ- ating plastic in film form from paper in a paper-plastic mix during the processing of urban solid waste. The invention comprises a two step separation process. Initial separation is effected by the action of rotating rollers which contact the paper-plastic mixture while it is being transported along a conveyor belt. Final separation occurs when the plastic film which has become entangled in the rollers is taken therefrom by a fan driven cyclone. This invention improves the separation process by skewing the axis of rotation of the separating rollers with respect to the velocity vector of the waste being transported along the conveyor belt. Once the plastic film has become entangled in the rods on the surface of the rollers, it passes successively from one roller to the next until it is carried past the edge of the main conveyor belt and deposited on an adjacent conveyor belt. The outlined improvements effect a reduction in plant manufacturing and operating costs and result in a more efficient separation process.
