La présente invention concerne un procédé de préparation de carbènes d'imidazolium de la formule (1), dans laquelle R¿1? et R¿2?, qui peuvent être les mêmes ou différents, désignent un hydrogène ou des groupes hydrocarbyle linéaires ou ramifiés, lequel procédé consiste à chauffer un halogénure d'imidazolium avec une base forte sous pression réduite et à séparer les produits obtenus. L'invention se rapporte également à un procédé de préparation de sels des carbènes d'imidazolium obtenus et à leur utilisation comme liquides ioniques.
