ABSTRACT New imidazole derivatives of the formula:- Image wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a straight- or branched-chain alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a straight- or branched-chain alkenyl or alkynyl group containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, and R2, R3 and R4, which may be the same or different, each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or a trifluoromethoxy group, or a methyl, ethyl, propyl or isopropyl group optionally substituted by one ? the ????so that R1, R2 R3 and R4 do not all ? hydrogen atoms, or more fluorine atoms, or one of the symbols R2, R3 and R4 represents a methoxy group and at least one of the other symbols R2, R3 and R4 represents a halogen atom, a trifluoro- methoxy group or a methyl, ethyl, propyl or isopropyl group optionally substituted by one or more fluorine atoms, are useful as herbicides.
