Double-stranded polynucleotide activates the expression of immune recognition molecules. The polynucleotide can have a minimal length and activates the expression of molecules not encoded by a nucleotide sequence that is not necessarily related to the polynucleotide. The present invention provides for a pharmaceutical composition that includes a drug capable of preventing tissue damage associated with altered cell cycle control and an autoimmune reaction induced by introducing isolated, non-coding double-strand polynucleotides of at least 25 base pairs that do not contain a stimulatory CpG motif into the cytoplasm of an ex vivo mammalian cell to cause the cell to present autoantigen, wherein the cell is not an immune cell of hemopoietic origin, thereby preventing atherosclerotic plaque development, treating autoimmune disease, treating an infection, treating transplantation rejection, or treating tumor cells, comprising an effective amount of methimazole derivatives, or tautomeric cyclic thiones; and at least one pharmaceutically acceptable excipient or carrier.
