Drugs having an inhibitory activity against IKK-.beta. and/or MEKK-1 or other protein kinases similar thereto in structure, which contain as the active ingredient substances selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the general formula (I), pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof, and hydrates and solvates of both: (I) wherein X is a connecting group whose main chain has 2 to 5 atoms and which may have a substituent; A is hydrogen or acetyl; E is optionally substituted aryl or optionally substituted heteroaryl; and Z is arene which may have a substituent in addition to the groups represented by the general formulae: -O-A (wherein A is as defined above) and -X-E (wherein X and E are as defined above) or heteroarene which may have a substituent in addition to the groups represented by the general formulae: -O-A (wherein A is as defined above) and -X-E (wherein X and E are as defined above).
