This invention relates to a method of immunizing a vertebrate, comprising introducing into the vertebrate a DNA transcription unit which comprises DNA encoding a desired antigen or antigens. The uptake of the DNA transcription unit by a host vertebrate results in the expression of the desired antigen or antigens, thereby eliciting humoral or cell-mediated immune responses or both humoral and cell-mediated responses. The elicited humoral and cell-mediated response can provide protection against infection by pathogenic agents, provide an anti-tumor response, or provide contraception. The host can be any vertebrate, avian or mammal, including humans.

Procédé permettant d'immuniser un vertébré selon lequel on introduit dans ce dernier une unité de transcription d'ADN comprenant de l'ADN de codage d'un ou de plusieurs antigènes désirés. La fixation de l'unité de transcription d'ADN par un vertébré hôte produit l'expression du ou des antigènes désirés, ceci ayant pour effet de provoquer des réponses immunes humorales ou à médiation cellulaire, ou bien des réponses humorales et des réponses à médiation cellulaire. La réponse immune humorale et à médiation cellulaire induite peut protéger contre les infections dues à des agents pathogènes, provoquer une réponse antitumorale ou assurer la contraception. L'hôte peut être n'importe quel vertébré, avien ou mammifère, et même un être humain.
