Electrochemical immunoassay methods are disclosed. In one method, a membrane is provided between the sample and the detecting electrode. The membrane is such that it will allow passage therethrough of unbound labelled analyte (but not its complex with antibody). The unbound labelled analyte, which is electrochemically active, may then be detected at the electrode. In a further method, the electrochemical immunoassay uses a labelled analyte which is both fluorescent and electrochemically active. This allows optimisation of the electrochemical immunoassay.
