Provided herein are methods and immunogenic compositions useful for protecting mammals from infection and pathology of P. gingivalis. Specifically, arginine- specific proteases of Porphyromonas gingivalis and peptides derived therefrom offer protection against infection. Immunogenic compositions comprising a 50 kDa arginine-specific protease, the high molecular weight complex or peptides from one of the foregoing proteins are capable of protecting against P. gingivalis infection and/or gingivitis and/or periodontitis caused thereby in mammals, including humans.

L'invention concerne des procédés et des compositions immunogènes servant à protéger des mammifères contre une infection par P. gingivalis et ses suites pathologiques. Plus particulièrement, des protéases de Porphyromonas gingivalis spécifiques à l'arginine et des peptides qui en sont dérivés offrent une protection contre une infection. Grâce à des compositions immunogènes contenant une protéase spécifique à l'arginine de 50 kDa, le complexe de masse moléculaire élevée ou des peptides provenant de l'une des protéines précédemment citées peuvent assurer une protection contre une infection par P. gingivalis et/ou une gingivite et/ou une parodontite causées par P. gingivalis chez les mammifères, y compris l'espèce humaine.
