Novel imide/amide ethers and alcohols having formula (I) wherein R2 is -H, alkyl of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, benzy, pyridylmethyl, or alkoxymethyl; R4 is -CX- , CH2- or -CH2CX-; X is O or S; and, n is 0, 1, 2, or 3, are inhibitors of cytokines including tumor necrosis factor .alpha. and can be used to combat cachexia, endotoxic shock, arthritis, asthma, and retrovirus replication. A typical embodiment is 3-phthalimido-3-(3',4'-dimethoxyphenyl)propan-1-ol.
