ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An impact girder for a door or side wall of a motor vehicle body has a longitudinally extending hollow space. Along outer edge portions the compression flange overhangs the lateral webs and this overhanging portion is raised relative to the recessed portions between the lateral webs so that, upon impact, the edge portions buckle outwardly and tear away from the remainder of the compression flange which buckles inwardly.
