A low velocity, high mass ram is connected to the cutting tool. The cutting tool has an array of impact forward and side buttons or bars which form chip-forming spaces there- between. The impact cutting tool has front impact breaking surfaces and impact side breaking surfaces protruding at an angle to the impact face and extending laterally of the impact face and beyond the cutting tool side wall for cutting a kerf width wider than the cutting tool side wall. The side buttons or bars advantageously cut a gage in the slot. A method of slot kerfing which cuts the kerf on an angle is disclosed.
