An airway implant device for maintaining and/or creating an opening in air passageways is disclosed. Methods of using the device are also disclosed. The airway implant device comprises an actuator element to control the opening of an air passageway. Preferably the actuator element is an electroactive polymer element. Energizing of the elctroactive polymer element provides support for the walls in order to prevent the collapse of an air passageway. Some embodiments of the invention include a sensor capable of sensing the possible occurrence of an apneic event and activating the actuator element of the airway implant device. Some embodiments include a housing designed to conform to the shape of the palate. Some embodiments include an attachment element to secure the device to tissue. Methods of treating airway disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring with the airway implant device are disclosed herein.
Cette invention se rapporte à un dispositif d'implant des voies respiratoires permettant de maintenir et/ou de créer une ouverture dans les voies aériennes. L'invention concerne également des procédés d'utilisation dudit dispositif. Le dispositif d'implant des voies respiratoires comprend un élément d'actionnement contrôlant l'ouverture d'une voie aérienne. De préférence, l'élément d'actionnement est un élément en polymère électroactif. L'alimentation de l'élément en polymère électroactif engendre le soutien des parois et empêche l'écrasement de ladite voie aérienne. Certains modes de réalisation de l'invention comprennent un capteur capable de détecter l'éventuelle occurrence d'un événement apnéique et d'activer l'élément d'actionnement du dispositif d'implant des voies respiratoires. Certains modes de réalisation comprennent un boîtier conçu pour s'adapter à la forme du palais. Certains modes de réalisation comprennent un élément de fixation qui maintient le dispositif et le tissu fixés l'un à l'autre. L'invention concerne par ailleurs des procédés de traitement des troubles des voies respiratoires, comme les apnées du sommeil et les ronflements, grâce au dit dispositif d'implant des voies respiratoires.
