An implantable cardiac defibrillator is provided having a battery, capacitive means, means coupled to the battery for charging the capacitive means, and means for coupling the capacitive means to a patient's heart, for delivering a high voltage shock to the heart. Current leakage from the capacitive means is detected. If the current leakage exceeds a predetermined amount, charging of the capacitive means is terminated. In one embodiment, voltage at the patient is directly sensed. In another embodiment, the voltage across a resistance located in series with the patient is sensed. In another embodiment, a test charge is provided for a short interval. The capacitive means is sensed to determine excessive loss of energy after the test charge. If excessive loss of energy is determined, charging is terminated.

Défibrillateur cardiaque implantable doté d'une pile, d'un dispositif capacitif, d'un autre dispositif couplé à la pile et destiné à charger ledit dispositif capacitif, et mécanisme pour coupler le dispositif capacitif au coeur du patient afin d'administrer une décharge à haute tension au coeur. Le courant de fuite du dispositif capacitif est détecté. Si le courant de fuite excède une valeur prédéterminée, le chargement du dispositif capacitif est arrêté. Dans une concrétisation, la tension au niveau du patient est captée directement. Dans une autre concrétisation, la tension à la résistance en série avec le patient est captée. Dans une troisième concrétisation, un essai de charge est réalisé pendant un court intervalle. Le dispositif capacitif est muni d'un capteur qui peut déterminer toute perte excessive d'énergie après l'essai de charge. Si la perte d'énergie est excessive, le chargement est terminé.
