The present invention relates to compositions for treating a disease, such as diabetes, by implanting encapsulated biological material into a patient in need of treatment. Several methods are presented for coating several different types of biological materials. The coatings can be placed directly onto the surface of the biological materials or onto the surface of other coating materials that hold the biological materials. The components of the polymerization reactions that produce the coatings can include natural and synthetic polymers, macromers, accelerants, cocatalysts, photoinitiators, and radiation. These encapsulated biological materials are used to treat a variety of different human and animal diseases or disorders by implanting them into several areas in the body including the subcutaneous site. The coating materials can be manipulated to provide different degrees of biocompatibility, protein diffusivity characteristics, strength, and biodegradability to optimize the delivery of biological materials from the encapsulated implant to the host recipient while protecting the encapsulated biological materials from destruction by the host inflammatory and immune protective mechanisms without requiring long-term anti-inflammatory or anti-immune treatment of the host.

L'invention porte sur des compositions de traitement de maladies telles que le diabète par implantation de matériaux biologiques encapsulés dans un patient nécessitant un tel traitement. Plusieurs procédés d'enrobage de différents types de matériaux biologiques sont présentés. Les revêtements peuvent se déposer directement à la surface des matériaux biologiques, ou à la surface de matériaux d'enrobage assurant la cohésion des matériaux biologiques. Les éléments participant à la réaction de polymérisation produisant le revêtement peuvent être: des polymères naturels ou synthétiques, des macromères, des accélérateurs, des cocatalyseurs, des photoamorceurs, et des radiations. Les implantations destinées à traiter différentes maladies et troubles de l'homme et de l'animal peuvent se faire en différents endroits du corps dont des sites sous-cutanés. Les matériaux d'enrobage peuvent être modulés pour assurer différents niveaux: de biocompatibilité; de caractéristiques de diffusion des protéines; de dosage; ou de biodégradabilité, pour optimiser l'administration des matériaux biologiques à partir de l'implant, tout en les protégeant contre la destruction par les mécanismes protecteurs inflammatoire et immunitaire de l'hôte, sans nécessiter de longs traitements anti-inflammatoires ou anti-immunitaires préalables.
