The present invention is an improvement in a free radical bulk polymerization process for preparing a high molecular weight polymer from a vinyl aromatic monomer characterized in that the polymerization is conducted in the presence of an acid catalyst having a pKa at 25 ~C of less than 2, or salt thereof, wherein the improvement comprises dispersing the acid catalyst, or salt thereof, in a (meth)acrylic acid or ester thereof, prior to contact with the vinyl aromatic monomer. The (meth)acrylic acid or ester allows the acid catalyst to be dispersed within the vinyl aromatic monomer without causing cationic polymerization. The acid catalyst, or salt thereof, catalyzes the free radical polymerization reaction such that high molecular weight polymers are produced in reasonable reaction times.
La présente invention concerne un perfectionnement du procédé de polymérisation en masse de radicaux libres pour la préparation d'un polymère de masse moléculaire élevée à partir d'un monomère aromatique du vinyl. Ce procédé est caractérisé en ce que la polymérisation s'effectue en présence d'un catalyseur acide présentant à 25 ·C un pKa inférieur à 2 ou en présence de l'un de ses sels. Le perfectionnement consiste à disperser le catalyseur acide ou ses sels, dans un acide acrylique ou méthacrylique, ou dans l'un de ses esters, avant le contact avec le monomère aromatique de vinyl. Cet acide acrylique ou méthacrylique ou les esters correspondants permettent la dispersion du catalyseur acide à l'intérieur du monomère acide de vinyl sans en provoquer la polymérisation cationique. Le catalyseur acide ou le sel correspondant catalyse la réaction de polymérisation des radicaux libres de façon à produire dans des délais de réaction raisonnables des polymères de masse moléculaire élevée.
