Aggregates, matrices, and composites exhibiting enhanced structural characteristics, together with methods and apparatuses for their manufacture, are disclosed. The aggregates of the present invention have a three-dimensional shape, a Tetrastar shape (10), which may be described as a base tetrahedro (the base) with coincident tetrahedra (12, 14, 16, 18) joining its four faces, or a Tetrawin shape (30), which may be described as a class of shapes based upon a pair of twin tetrahedra joined on a single face, or the shape (20) of six obelisks (21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26) extending from the six faces of a base cube.
