An improved method and apparatus for treating mammalian hypothermy comprising, in a preferred embodiment, a portable, self-powered, lightweight apparatus having a vacuum chamber for receiving a limb of a hypothermia subject, a hand vacuum pump to manually produce a negative atmosphere in the vacuum chamber, gasket means for sealing the vacuum chamber from atmosphere, and an exothermic chemically-activated heat source for supplying heat to the subject limb. The limb of the hypothermic subject is placed in the vacuum chamber after application of the heat source about the limb, and the chamber is sealed and evacuated. Shortly thereafter, and up to at least an order of magnitude faster than conventional forced air warming techniques, the core body temperature of the hypothermic subject may be rapidly increased to normal temperature. The preferred apparatus is designed for use in the field as well as in the hospital in a portable, self-contained manner.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil améliorés destinés au traitement de l'hypothermie chez les mammifères et comprenant, dans un mode de réalisation préféré, un appareil portatif léger à alimentation propre composé d'une chambre à vide destinée à recevoir un membre d'un sujet souffrant d'hypothermie, d'une pompe à vide manuelle permettant de créer manuellement une atmosphère négative à l'intérieur de la chambre à vide, d'un joint d'étanchéité statique permettant d'assurer l'étanchéité de la chambre à vide en l'isolant de l'atmosphère, et d'une source de chaleur exothermique à activation chimique destinée à fournir la chaleur au membre du sujet. On place le membre du sujet hypothermique dans la chambre à vide après avoir appliqué la source de chaleur autour du membre, on étanchéifie et on évacue la chambre. Peu après, et dans un ordre de grandeur au moins plus rapide que les techniques de réchauffement par air pulsé, la température profonde du corps du sujet hypothermique peut rapidement augmenter jusqu'à une température normale. L'appareil préféré se présente sous une forme portative autonome conçue pour être utilisée sur le terrain et en milieu hospitalier.
