An automatic recirculation valve (10) having an inlet (16), a main outlet (18), and a recirculation outlet (20). A main valve element (28) responsive to the flow between the inlet (16) and main outlet (18) and a bypass element (32) responsive to the main valve element (28) regulates the fluid flow to the recirculation outlet (20). The bypass element (32) contains orifices (52a, 52b) through which the fluid flows to the recirculation outlet (20). The orifices (52a, 52b) are arranged to counterbalance fluid forces exerted on the bypass element (32).
