A ball valve (10) is described which has a ball valve retaining mechanism which, when subject to very slight movement, allows a ball element (20) to be unloaded off a valve seat (48) during rotation, but remain in contact with the valve seat (48) so as to prevent debris ingress between the ball and the valve seat, and to instantaneously reload onto the valve seat upon the event of closure. This instantaneous and automatic redirection of the reaction load path at the occurrence of closure provides an effective seal against high pressure aggressive fluids to prevent fluid escaping beyond the valve components whilst, at the same time, allowing effective rotational movement of the valve to occur without providing rotational reliability. This solution allows conflicting load paths through the valve to be resolved, namely through the trunnion during rotation and through the valve seat during sealing.

L'invention concerne un clapet à bille (10) possédant un mécanisme de retenue qui, quand il est soumis à un déplacement très léger, permet à une bille (20) de se séparer du siège de clapet (48) pendant la rotation, mais reste en contact avec le siège de clapet (48), de manière à empêcher l'introduction de débris entre la bille et le siège de clapet et à se replacer instantanément sur le siège de clapet dans le cas d'une fermeture. Ce changement instantané et automatique du trajet de positionnement sur le siège de clapet sous l'effet d'une réaction au moment de la fermeture permet d'obtenir une étanchéité efficace contre des liquides agressifs sous pression élevée, ce qui empêche la fuite de ces liquides au-delà des éléments du clapet, tout en permettant simultanément au clapet d'effectuer une rotation sans que celle-ci soit absolument assurée. Ceci apporte une solution à la contradiction entre les trajets de charge à travers le clapet, notamment à travers le croisillon pendant la rotation et à travers le siège de clapet pendant la période d'étanchéité.
