A retractable syringe (10) and plunger (20) therefore are provided, the syringe having a barrel (20), a retractable needl mount (40) to which is mounted or is mountable a needle (11), and a plunger (80), the plunger comprising an initially compressed spring (60), a means for engaging the retractable needle mount, an integrally formed plunger seal (22) and a removable controlling means (70) for facilitating control of the rate of retraction of needle mount when engaged wit plunger. The needle mount is held in the barrel by a holding means which prevents inadvertent retraction of the needle mount when the plunger is withdrawn to fill the syringe. The holding means comprises a plurality of clips (196A, 196B, 196C) that may be integrally formed with the barrel or may be present on a cap mounted to the barrel. An ejector means (52) is also provided, whereby plunger depression can urge the ejector means to release the needle from the holding means and thereby allow retraction of the needle mount following decompression of the spring.

La seringue comporte un barillet (20), un porte-aiguille escamotable (40) sur lequel est ou peut être montée une aiguille (11), et un plongeur (80) comprenant un ressort initialement comprimé (60), un moyen pour venir en prise avec le porte-aiguille escamotable, un joint d~étanchéité (22) formé d~un seul tenant et un moyen de réglage amovible (70) servant à faciliter le réglage de la vitesse d~escamotage du porte-aiguille lorsqu~il est en prise avec le plongeur. Le porte-aiguille est maintenu dans le barillet par un moyen de maintien empêchant l~escamotage accidentel du porte-aiguille lors du retrait du plongeur pour effectuer le remplissage de la seringue. Le moyen de maintien comprend une pluralité de clips (196A, 196B, 196C) pouvant être formés d~un seul tenant avec le barillet ou mis en place sur un capuchon monté sur le barillet. La seringue comporte également un moyen d~éjection (52). Lorsque le plongeur est enfoncé, il pousse le moyen d~éjection qui libère alors l~aiguille du moyen de maintien en permettant ainsi l~escamotage du porte-aiguille par détente du ressort.
