An end member for attachment to both ends of a unit of fire hose or an adapter for a fire hose, the end member having a generally tubular shape defining an axial opening, an outer surface, an engaging face, a base, cams, lugs and a sealing gasket, cams and lugs mounted on the outer surface of the end member proximate the engaging face, the improvement comprising an axial rearward extension of at least one lug on the outer surface of the end member extending substantially to the base of the end member, the axial rearward extension having a base, top and sides, the side walls of the axial rearward extension being concave between the top and base of the axial rearward extension.
