A hermetic terminal (10) for use with hermetic compressors having an improved electrical insulation coating (34, 36). The coating provides improved chemical resistance on the inside of the hermetic terminal and also provides improved mechanical, electrical and thermal characteristics on the exterior side of the hermetic terminal. The hermetic terminal comprises a metallic terminal body (12) adapted to form a hermetic seal with a terminal opening in the hermetic compressor housing. The terminal body of the hermetic terminal has an interior surface adapted to face internally in the compressor housing and an exterior surface adapted to face externally of the compressor housing. A plurality of conductor pins (24) extend through an opening (20) formed in the terminal body and are adapted to conduct electricity through the terminal into the compressor housing. Each conductor pin is hermetically sealed in the opening and electrically insulated from the terminal body. A coating (34, 36) of poly(oxy-1,4-phenyleneoxy-1,4-phenylenecarbonyl-1-4-phenylene) (PEEK) is adhered to the terminal and partially covers the interior and exterior surfaces of the terminal body.
