The present invention provides thickened fabrics and reinforcements for use as a spacer or reinforcement for a matrix system. The fabric includes in a first embodiment a woven fabric comprising weft and warp yarns containing glass fibers. A portion of the weft yarns are undulated into a sinusoidal path forming a generally "C" shaped bridge between adjacent warp yarns which results in an increased thickness for the fabric. The fabric is coated with a polymeric resin or bonding agent, for substantially binding the weft yarns in the undulated condition. This invention also includes methods for making such fabric by increasing the thickness of a woven or non-woven material by such methods as applying tension to warp yarns having opposite twists during weaving operations, or using unbalanced yarns, for example.
La présente invention permet d'obtenir des tissus plus épais ainsi que des renforts à utiliser comme entretoises ou comme renforts dans un système matriciel. Le tissu comprend, dans une première application, une toile tissée comprenant des fils de trame et de chaîne contenant des fibres de verre. Les fils de trame sont en partie ondulés et suivent un parcours sinusoïdal en formant généralement un pont en forme de C entre les fils de chaîne adjacents, ce qui augmente l'épaisseur du tissu. Ce dernier est revêtu d'une résine polymérique ou d'un agent de liage pour lier les fils de trame afin qu'ils restent ondulés. Cette invention porte également sur des procédés pour fabriquer ce tissu en augmentant l'épaisseur d'un matériau tissé ou non tissé. Ces procédés consistent par exemple à appliquer une force de tension aux fils de trame aux torsions opposées pendant le tissage, ou à utiliser des fils à la tension mal équilibrée.
