A water heating boiler having a novel flue configuration is disclosed. A vertical combustion chamber is located inside a water tank. Air entering the combustion chamber passes down the combustion chamber past a burner to produce heated combustion gases. The heated air passes downwardly out of the combustion chamber into an air transfer duct which is oriented horizontally along the floor of the tank. The heated air then passes sequentially through a series of horizontal passes through the tank. The series of horizontal passes is arranged vertically in the tank. Each pass communicates with a previous pass outside of the tank.
