An improved thermally stable, storage stable gas generating composition characterized by both an increased burning rate and a decreased pressure exponent for producing a clean, nontoxic, substantially ash- and solids- free gas for inflating inflatable structures such as vehicle airbags is provided. Optimum combustion efficiencies and operating pressures are achieved in the improved gas generating composition by adding an effective amount of a copper or copper compound catalyst to a gas generating composition that is preferably a eutectic mixture or solid solution of ammonium nitrate, at least one highly oxygenated fuel, potassium or cesium perchlorate or nitrate and an optional binder.
Cette invention se rapporte à une composition gazogène améliorée, thermiquement stable et stable au stockage, qui se caractérise à la fois par une vitesse de combustion accrue et par un exposant de pression réduit, en vue de produire un gaz propre, non toxique et sensiblement exempt de cendres et de particules solides, destinés au gonflage de structures gonflables tels que airbags de véhicules automobiles. On obtient les efficacités de combustion et les pressions de fonctionnement optimales pour cette composition gazogène améliorée, en ajoutant une quantité efficace d'un catalyseur au cuivre ou un composé de cuivre à une composition gazogène qui est constituée de préférence par un mélange eutectique ou une solution solide de nitrate d'ammonium, d'au moins un combustible hautement oxygéné, de perchlorate ou de nitrate de potassium ou de césium et d'un liant optionnel.
