A harness apparatus for attachment to a torso of a forest firefighter to facilitate carrying a standard pack comprises a semi-rigid upper yoke comprising a substantially upright back portion and shoulder portions extending upward from the back portion, then forward over the shoulders and down over right and left areas of the chest. A semi rigid substantially upright lower belt band extends around a lower portion of the back of the torso and includes a raised back portion. An adjustable waist strap releasably connects the belt band across a front of the lower torso. Adjustable front and rear straps releasably connect the yoke to the belt band. An adjustable chest strap releasably connects shoulder portions of the yoke across the chest. Releasable pack connectors are oriented to allow the standard pack to be secured such that a lower end of the pack is located in proximity to the belt band. A sway strap is releasably attachable between a rear portion of the yoke and a rear portion of the belt band and oriented to force the standard pack against the torso.
