Induction heating apparatus for use in welding an end of a first length of pipe (26) to the exterior surface of a second length of pipe (28), consists of heating assemblies (20, 24) each comprising at least one electrical induction coil (32, 36) wound on an annular, laminated, magnetic core assembly (30, 34). The lowermost surfaces of said core assembly (30, 34) define a saddle shape adapted to be seated on the exterior surface of said second length of pipe (28). The arrangement of the coils (32, 36) and the core assemblies (30, 34) is such that substantially all of the magnetic flux generated when the apparatus is seated on the pipe (28) and the coil is energised is contained within the core assembly and within the wall of the pipe (28). Advantageously, the core assemblies (30, 34) have E-sections profiles, the ends of the limbs of the E-sections comprising the lowermost surfaces of the core assemblies and the coils being wound about the central limbs of the E-sections. The core assembly is formed from a plurality of part-annular segments, each segment having an individual induction coil associated therewith. The apparatus may comprise first and second heating assemblies, the first extending around the outer periphery of a circular weld zone defined on the exterior surface of said second length of pipe and the second extending around the inner periphery of the weld zone.

L'invention porte sur un appareil de chauffage par induction destiné à être utilisé dans le soudage d'une extrémité d'une première longueur de tuyau (26) à la surface extérieure d'une seconde longueur de tuyau (28). Cet appareil comprend des ensembles (20, 24) de chauffage comportant chacun au moins une bobine (32, 36) d'induction électrique enroulée sur un ensemble noyau magnétique laminé, annulaire. Les surfaces les plus basses de cet ensemble (30, 34) noyau sont en forme de selle et peuvent s'adapter sur la surface extérieure de la longueur de tuyau (28). L'agencement des bobines (32, 36) et des ensembles (30, 34) noyau est tel que presque tout le flux magnétique, généré lorsque l'appareil est mis en place sur le tuyau (28) et que la bobine est excitée, est contenu dans l'ensemble noyau et à l'intérieur de la paroi du tuyau (28). De manière avantageuse, les ensembles noyaux (30, 34) ont des profils à section en E, les extrémités des bords des sections en E comprenant les surfaces les plus basses des ensembles noyaux et les bobines enroulées autour des éléments centraux des sections en E. L'ensemble noyau est constitué d'une pluralité de segments annulaires fractionnés, une bobine d'induction individuelle étant associée à chacun de ces segments. L'appareil peut comporter des premier et second ensembles chauffants, le premier s'étendant sur la périphérie externe d'une zone de soudage circulaire formée sur la surface extérieure de la seconde longueur de tuyau, et le second s'étendant sur la périphérie interne de la zone de soudage.
