Interferometer apparatus for studying the surface of an object, the apparatus comprising: a source producing an object beam of coherent light; a source producing a reference beam which is coherent with the object beam; and a detector or a plurality of detectors arranged in an array; wherein the apparatus is arranged such that the object beam is diverging or substantially collimated; and wherein, in use: the diverging or substantially collimated object beam is directed towards the surface of the object to produce a reflected object beam reflected from the surface of the object; the detector(s) is/are focused to a point beneath the surface of the object; and the reflected object beam is combined with the reference beam and detected by the detector(s). Also provided is a corresponding method for conducting an interferometric study of the surface of an object. The surface of the object may be a sea floor, and the interferometer apparatus may be for studying the movement of particles on the sea floor in response to a seismic event.
L'invention porte sur un appareil d'interféromètre pour étudier la surface d'un objet. L'appareil comporte une source produisant un faisceau d'objet de lumière cohérente; une source produisant un faisceau de référence cohérent avec le faisceau d'objet; et un détecteur ou plusieurs détecteurs disposés en un réseau. Lappareil est conçu de telle sorte que le faisceau d'objet est divergent ou sensiblement collimaté. Lors de l'utilisation de lappareil, le faisceau d'objet divergent ou sensiblement collimaté est dirigé vers la surface de l'objet de façon à produire un faisceau d'objet réfléchi, réfléchi par la surface de l'objet; le ou les détecteurs est/sont focalisés vers un point sous la surface de l'objet; et le faisceau d'objet réfléchi est combiné au faisceau de référence et est détecté par le ou les détecteurs. L'invention porte également sur un procédé correspondant pour effectuer une étude interférométrique de la surface d'un objet. La surface de l'objet peut être un fond marin et l'appareil d'interféromètre peut servir à étudier le mouvement de particules sur le fond marin en réponse à un événement sismique.
