A mass fuel combustion furnace comprises a mass fuel feed element, a combustion chamber positioned to receive mass fuel from the mass fuel feed element, a grate system within the combustion chamber and having an input end and an output end across which mass fuel is transported, a combustion gas feed within the combustion chamber, a mix gas feed within the combustion chamber, an independent mix gas pulse system which is independent of the combustion gas feed and to which the mix gas feed is responsive and an ash discharge system situated in the vicinity of the output end of the grate system.
