Disclosed is a mat reinforced gypsum board (40) comprising a gypsum-based core (42) and a fibrous mat (16) reinforcing at least one side of said core. The fibrous mat (16) has a weight per unit surface area greater than about 1.85 lbs./100 sq. ft. and comprises a major proportion of inorganic fibers having a diameter of less than about 15 microns.
