Oil aging and particulate building in a lubricant other than one exposed to combustion products is monitored by detecting light transmitted through the lubricant at least one, and preferably, two or more preselected wavelengths over a pathlength greater than about 0.5 cm wherein one wavelength is in the near infra-red spectrum and/or one wavelength is in the visible or near infra- red spectrum. The detected light when compared to predetermined values provides an indication of the condition of the lubricant.

Dans la présente invention, le vieillissement de l'huile et l'accumulation des particules dans un lubrifiant autre qu'un lubrifiant exposé à des produits de combustion, sont surveillés au moyen de la détection de la lumière ayant traversé le lubrifiant à au moins une et de préférence deux longueurs d'onde prédéfinies sur une longueur de parcours supérieure à 0,5 cm, une des longueurs d'onde se trouvant dans le spectre infrarouge proche et/ou une longueur d'onde se trouvant dans le spectre visible ou infrarouge proche. La comparaison de la lumière détectée à des valeurs prédéterminées donne une indication de l'état du lubrifiant.
