A method is provided for treating liquid containing known solutes which comprises delivering the liquid into a partly above ground level reservoir (10) containing a pervious treatment medium (23), the reservoir (10) being lined with a material (20) impervious to the liquid to prevent leakage, maintaining intimate contact between the liquid and the treatment mud for a period sufficient to reduce selected solutes to predetermined levels.
