A multi-level personal utility cart includes a frame including a vertical rear panel and a handle including latching structure on side portions of the handle, each latching structure being structurally engaged with a portion of the rear panel, a lower basket assembly carried by and pivotably attached to the frame, an upper basket assembly carried by and pivotably attached to the frame, where the upper and lower basket assemblies are pivotable in a direction toward the upper portion of the handle so that the upper and lower basket assemblies can be collapsed against a portion of the frame into a compact and substantially planar structure. The latching structure on the handle operatively cooperates with the rear panel to automatically lock the cart in an opened position. An access door to the lower basket assembly is provided. Also disclosed is a method for deterring theft of "conventional" shopping carts which entails providing "non-conventional" shopping carts of the inventive type to users for purchase, marking the "non-conventional" shopping carts with information identifying the user as the owner of the cart, marking the "non-conventional" shopping carts with information identifying one or more vendors of services or products offered or sold at a market, and providing the user with discounts on the services or products offered or sold by the one or more vendors to the market
L'invention concerne un chariot utilitaire personnel à plusieurs niveaux, qui se compose d'un châssis comprenant un pan arrière vertical et d'une poignée munie d'une structure de verrouillage sur ses parties latérales, chaque structure de verrouillage étant structurellement accouplée avec une partie du pan arrière, un ensemble panier inférieur supporté et monté de manière pivotante sur le châssis, un ensemble panier supérieur, supporté et monté de manière pivotante sur le châssis, les ensembles paniers supérieur et inférieur pouvant pivoter en direction de la partie supérieure de la poignée, de façon à venir se replier contre une partie du châssis pour former une structure compacte et sensiblement plane. La structure de verrouillage de la poignée coopère de manière fonctionnelle avec le pan arrière pour verrouiller automatiquement le chariot en position ouverte. Une porte permettant d'accéder au panier inférieur est en outre aménagée. L'invention concerne également un procédé permettant de décourager les vols de chariots de marché <= conventionnel >=, qui consiste à fournir aux utilisateurs les chariots <= non-conventionnels >= décrits pour leurs achats, à inscrire sur les chariots <= non conventionnels >= une information identifiant l'utilisateur en tant que détenteur du chariot, à inscrire sur les chariots <= non conventionnels >= une information indiquant un ou plusieurs fournisseurs de services ou de produits proposés ou vendus dans un marché, et à offrir des rabais à l'utilisateur sur les services ou les produits proposés par un ou plusieurs fournisseurs du marché.
