A method of providing a logging function in a portable navigation device (PND), and a PND adapted to provide such a function are described. The method includes the step of storing location information relating to current position and time-specific information relating to said current position in a non-volatile memory of the device to create a log, and is characterized in that the storage of such information only occurs when one of a specified set of events occurs, said set of events being specific to either a navigation mode or a free-driving mode of operation of the device. Preferably, the set of events particular to a navigation mode are one or more of: user-specification of an activity, calculation of a new route, recalculation of a new route subsequent to a deviation from a previous route, reaching a destination; and the set of events particular to a free driving mode are one or more of: user-specification of an activity, powering the device on and/or off, deviation of the device from the current direction and/or road along which the device is traveling.
La présente invention concerne un procédé fournissant une fonction de consignation dans un dispositif de navigation portable (PND) et un PND conçu pour fournir cette fonction. Le procédé comprend l'étape de mémorisation des informations de localisation relatives à la position actuelle et des informations temporelles relatives à la position actuelle dans une mémoire non-volatile du dispositif afin de créer un journal. Il est caractérisé en ce que la mémorisation de ces informations ne survient que lorsque l'un des ensembles spécifiés d'événements survient, cet ensemble d'événements étant spécifique à un mode de navigation ou à un mode de conduite libre de fonctionnement du dispositif. L'ensemble d'événements spécifique à un mode de conduite libre comprend un ou plusieurs des éléments suivants : la spécification d'une activité par l'utilisateur, la mise sous tension ou l'arrêt du dispositif ou les deux, la déviation du dispositif par rapport à la direction actuelle et/ou à la route actuelle route par rapport à laquelle le dispositif se déplace.
