A method of operating a portable navigation device (PND) or navigation system having a digital camera associated therewith and controlled thereby is described. An appropriately enabled PND or navigation system is also covered. The invention includes capturing digital image data, and is characterized by performing a pattern recognition technique on said captured digital image data to determine whether the image contains one or more recognizable pre-defined features, and further characterized by the storage of at least some information including an indication of the feature identified for which the pattern recognition technique was successful together with geospatial location data identifying the approximate position of at least one of. the location of the device at the instant when the digital image was captured or within a predetermined time threshold of that instant, a calculated predicted location of the device at the instant the digital image was captured, said prediction being based on an earlier stored device position information, and a calculated approximation of the location of the feature identified in the captured digital image.
La présente invention concerne un procédé de fonctionnement d'un dispositif de navigation portable (PND) ou d'un système de navigation comportant une caméra numérique associée commandée par celui-ci. Elle traite aussi d'un PND ou d'un système de navigation activé de manière appropriée. L'invention implique la capture de données d'image numérique. Elle est caractérisée par l'exécution d'une technique de reconnaissance des formes sur lesdites données d'image numérique capturées pour déterminer si l'image contient une ou plusieurs caractéristiques prédéfinies reconnaissables, et est caractérisée en outre par le stockage d'au moins quelques informations comprenant une indication de la caractéristique identifiée pour laquelle la technique de reconnaissance des formes s'est déroulée avec succès ainsi que de données de localisation géospatiale identifiant la position approximative d'au moins l'un des éléments suivants : l'emplacement de l'appareil au moment où l'image numérique a été capturée ou dans une fenêtre de temps prédéterminée du moment en question, un emplacement prévu calculé de l'appareil au moment où l'image numérique a été capturée, ladite prévision étant fondée sur des informations concernant la position de l'appareil mémorisées précédemment, et une approximation calculée de l'emplacement de la caractéristique identifiée dans l'image numérique capturée.
