An O-ring (10, 12) is provided for use in an adjustable surgical wound protector having a solid cross-section including a cross-sectional center (20) that is spaced from a central longitudinal axis and a resilient configuration for squeezing into an oblong shape that is insertable into a surgical shape. At least one recess (26, 28) is defined in the O-ring that is selectively sized and shaped to enable a snap action rolling of the O-ring about the cross- sectional center in predetermined increments. The recess may comprise various cross-sectional shapes, such as, at least one circumferential groove, a plurality of circumferentially positioned recesses (70), or be shaped such that the O-ring comprises a cruciform cross-section. An improved incrementally adjustable apparatus for protecting an incised wound from exposure to bacterial and other harmful contaminants is also provided including a pair of resilient O-rings (10, 12) connected to opposite ends of an impermeable pliable sleeve (8).
L'invention concerne un joint torique destiné à être utilisé dans un protège-plaie chirurgical réglable. Ce joint possède une section transversale solide comprenant un centre de section transversal espacé d'un axe longitudinal central, ainsi qu'une configuration souple permettant l'écrasement en une forme oblongue pour insertion dans une incision chirurgicale. Au moins un évidement est défini dans le joint torique, formé et calibré de façon sélective pour permettre un enroulement par action rapide du joint torique autour du centre de section transversale selon des pas de progression déterminés. L'évidement peut comprendre différents profils de sections transversales tels qu'au moins une fente circonférentielle, plusieurs évidements placés circonférentiellement, ou peut être formé de façon que le joint torique comprenne une section transversale en forme de croix. L'invention concerne également appareil réglable de façon progressive permettant de protéger un plaie incisée contre la contamination bactérienne ou contre d'autres contaminants nuisibles, cet appareil comprenant une paire de joints toriques souples reliés à des extrémités opposées d'un manchon pliable imperméable. Un des joints est formé de façon à s'engager avec le bord intérieur de la plaie avec une partie du manchon située au-dessus de la plaie pouvant être roulée sur l'autre anneau afin de tirer la partie de manchon restante contiguë aux côtés de la plaie.
